The Themes of Sleep and Night in Shakepeare's Macbeth
Shakespeare used the reputation of darkness and night to his advantage when he constructed his tragic masterpiece, Macbeth. He starts the theme at the very opening of the play using the witches as his muse and continues the theme throughout. In the world of Macbeth, the night should be feared, sleep regarded as dangerous, and the daytime as only a small resting place in between.
