This paper examines the ideas of Norman and Shallice about motivation and how poeple perform certain actions, noting that automatic processes are those that take place without the individual consciously willing that they take place, though these actions as well as others can be controlled by the individual if desired, and showing that conscious control can be used to thwart unwanted actions and to enhance wanted actions.
