The types of illness can vary greatly from social phobias that cause people not to be able to function at work because of always feeling watched, depression, and alcohol or drug use (which is often a residual of depression or vice versa). Within these varying illnesses one can note two different reactions to these illnesses from coworkers and employers. The two greatest reactions to mental illness in the work place is that of compassion and that of concern from a liability standpoint whether it be money or morale. This essay will start with the types of illnesses, their specific affect on those that have the illness and those that must be exposed to it because of close proximity in the work environment.
