This paper compares the strains of political theory that went into the creation of the U.S. Constitution, republicanism and federalism, as derived from Jean Jacques Rousseau and John Locke, who show both similarities and differences in their views, and extending back to Aristotle and Plato in the ancient world, showing how these strains were apparent in "The Federalist Papers" and the Constitution itself.
