Herceptin Vs. Cancer: What We Know and What We Need to Know
This ten-page undergraduate paper examines Genentechs breakthrough breast cancer drug Herceptin, which was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration in 1998, and is the first in an expected wave of new therapies that will attempt to beat back cancer by attacking the disease at its genetic roots. The development of Herceptin was a joint effort of UCLAs Jonsson Cancer Center and the biotechnology company Genentech, Inc., of South San Francisco. The book, Her-2: The Making of Herceptin, a Revolutionary Treatment for Breast Cancer, presents the story of the drug Herceptin, which produced dramatic responses in breast cancer patients such as Barbara Bradfield, as well as in other women suffering from this tragic disease.
