This is a critical appraisal of developmental evolution of expertise in diabetes self-management. This study was guided by the hypothesis that "experts would make self-management decisions in accordance with the meaning that the situation/event had for them, that they would derive this meaning from their interaction with others, and that they interpret the situation according to this meaning" (Paterson & Thorne, 2000, p. 3).
