The Christ Dream : The Quest for Significance in the Universe of Nathanael West's Miss Lonelyhearts .
This paper will examine the means by which Miss Lonelyhearts attempts to define himself and his function in the face of a universe that is at best indifferent, and at worse hostile, to human dreams and suffering. It will be argued that only through the delusion of divinity, and its association with omnipotence, is Miss Lonelyhearts able to maintain some sense of purpose within his universe. 7 pgs. 9 f/c. 3b.
