Sophocles' Character of Antigone: The Tragic Hero as Woman
This paper shall examine the character of Antigone from Sophocles' tragedy, "Antigone". It will be argued that her words and actions are in contradiction with the classical Greek conception of a tragic hero. It will be shown that only by situating the text in the sexist cultural context within which it was created can we truly understand the contradictions inherent in the tragic character of Antigone. 5 pgs. 13 f/c. 6b.
