When one sets out to define Romanticism one runs into the problem of its multiplicity. The more one defines, the broader the scope. Romanticism can be considered passionate, rebellious, emotional, relentless, sensual, aggressive, etc. One scholar actually tried to define it by simply labeling it as anything that rebels against the norm. However, the writers working during the movement, a movement that spawned in resistance to Classicism, defined the movement with their passion and zest for life.
