This paper discusses the concept of nature as reflected in Nathaniel Hawthorne's work, "The Scarlet Letter." Nature and its impact on various characters are discussed, with focus on the freedom found in nature. The book's major characters: Hestor, Pearl, Chillingworth, et al. are reviewed in light of their experiences with nature. Additionally, there is comparison between Hawthorne's concept of nature and that of the Puritanical society.
