All writer are encouraged to write what they know, but few do so with such grace as Twain, who managed to blend the real and the fictitious with a deft touch that allowed both genres to be touched by humor as well as far the more serious purpose of trying to capture what was right about American life and reform away what was wrong about life along the Mississippi and other American byways.
