Janie is at the beginning of her life, just about to bloom into the body of a woman (represented by the pears). Eventually love dies, followed by Joe. O-Lan, is a stoically submissive, uncomplaining tower of strength. As represented in literature, men and women are the two sides of life, the halves that make the whole. Janie and O-Lan find their commonality in the fact that they both need a man who will keep them "in line" in order to feel needed. 3 pgs. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
