Familiarity and Convention in Junot Diazs Short Fiction
This essay addresses two issues in Junot Diaz's short stories, collected in the volume "Drown": the omission of quotation marks, integrating dialogue as a description of characters, and the use of Spanish terms to mark familiarity or emotional content. Female characters' use of extended Spanish phrases is also addressed from the reader's perspective as a monolingual English speaker.
