This paper provides a brief overview on the subject of illicit substance abuse and the role that the nurse practitioner needs to play in this problem. Pregnant women with substance abuse issues are threatened in terms of their right to privacy, and nurse practitioners have the ability to identify substance abuse problems and to suggest treatment strategies.
