This paper examines the character of Tripitaka, the central protagonist in Wu Cheng-en's Monkey, translated by Arthur Waley. The paper argues briefly that the Tripitaka's character is representative of the human spirit and its continuing quest to discover meaning and its own place within the world. Thus, Tripitaka's pilgrimage to India represents his efforts to discover a community of his own.
