This paper discusses the cult of Mao and why it developed, commenting on the statement by Maurice Meisner that the "Cult of Mao" was "one of the most extreme examples in modern history of the alienation of the social power of the people into fetishized political authority" and noting the role of Mao after the Chinese Revolution and through his entire time as leader.
