This paper explores the question of how Americans see themselves. The paper observes that Americans regard themselves in a multifaceted perspective. To a large degree, they very much see themselves as individuals, yet at the same time as a community as well. Overall, however, it becomes clear that Americans have never reached on a consensus on who they are, largely because their experience can never be characterized in homogeneous terms. 6 pgs.
